Laying Our Cards on the Table

The digital learning team at the American Museum of Natural History in New York is doing some awesome projects that bring learning, games and new technology together. Our first collaboration with the museum was for their Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs exhibit. In addition to some incredible fossils and models, AMNH put together an interactive trading card game to go along with the exhibition. We added a high-tech twist to their game by incorporating an augmented reality app that really made the flying reptiles pop.

Models of a Certain Age

The game that the museum designed features a deck of pterosaur playing cards that players can use to battle each other. Each card features a creature with unique powers that you can use against your opponent.

To add another layer of fun to the game, we designed the Pterosaurs: The Card Game AR app. Players can point the app at an AR target on certain cards that brings up a fully animated 3D pterosaur. Our pterosaurs fly, walk, fish and are modeled on actual scientific data we have on the creatures.

Pterosaurs Take Flight!

The pterosaur card game was sold in the museum gift shop as an addition to the exhibit. Nowadays, the pterosaurs have left the American Museum of Natural History and migrated south to Brazil, where they are currently touring. This was our first project for AMNH and the start of a great relationship. We’re currently working on developing another game for the museum that should launch in the winter of 2015.
